Channing Frye To Remain A Phoenix Son

Because he's from Phoenix ... get it? Phoenix Son. Phoenix Sun. Local kid ... anyway.

It was busy day for Channing and the Channing watchers of the world. It went something like this:

  • Channing offered 5yrs/$20m (may even have been offered 4yrs/$16m, but that's sketchy)
  • Channing offered 5yrs/$25m
  • Channing reportedly looking for full MLE (5yrs/$32m-ish)
  • Suns reported not willing to budge on 5yrs/$25m. That's the final offer
  • Channing gets interest from other team -- reportedly Bulls and Knicks
  • Suns up the final offer
  • Channing accepts 5yrs/$30m

Of course (and I really shouldn't have to say this), remember that all of these reports are just reports and not cold hard facts. Reporters get info and pass it along. Some of it is good. Some of it is bad. That's life; try not to shoot the messenger.

So a busy day in the life of former free agent Channing Frye. I made my feelings quite clear throughout the day that I thought he was worth the MLE for reasons I won't repeat again (click here or here if you care).

Left up to the will of the people in our ever-so-scientific polling, 53% voted to pay the man while 28% were ok with the $25m offer and the rest wanted to see him get less. In my sick, twisted mind, Robert Sarver saw this poll and listened to the will of the fans and upped his offer in a brilliant attempt to rehabilitate his image as a cheap skate. There is NO evidence to support that, but that's ok; this is just a blog so our standards are already low.

Barring any unforeseen complications, Frye will sign his new contract around the 8th of July when the signing period begins and will remain a Sun for a long time. I look forward to his improving his game both off the dribble, in the paint and defensively.

There is risk in giving a $32m contract to a guy who's had one good season, but in this case ... well, we will just have to wait and see how that plays out, but I am open to taking your creative bets if you think he'll be a bust.

Welcome back, Channing. Phoenix wouldn't have been the same without you. Please don't feel you need to punch Earl Watson in the back of the head next season to prove you aren't soft.
